- Use the model to list questions and metrics to check, not to name what to buy.
- Download the filings yourself from EDGAR and give the relevant sections to the model.
- Ask it to quote the passage behind every number, then check each quote.
- Write down your own assumptions for any valuation and test how the result changes.
- Treat the output as a draft of your own research, and decide with full awareness of the risks.

Key context and caveats#
A model has no reliable access to today's prices or the latest filing unless you supply them, and it can present a wrong figure with confidence. The SEC's Investor.gov says an investor can find a wealth of information in a company's Form 10-K, which offers a detailed picture of what the company does and the risks it faces, and that EDGAR provides free public access to company filings.
The regulators' warnings are specific. A joint SEC, NASAA and FINRA investor alert titled Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Investment Fraud (January 25, 2024) says to be wary of claims that AI can guarantee amazing investment returns. The SEC's Investor Bulletin on performance claims says past performance does not necessarily predict future results and that targets and projections are hypothetical. This is not investment advice.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best AI prompts for stock research?
AI can help organise stock research, but it is not investment advice and can state wrong numbers confidently. Check every figure in company filings on SEC EDGAR. The SEC, NASAA and FINRA warn that claims AI can guarantee returns are a sign of fraud.
Can AI pick stocks for me?
It can help you structure research, but it cannot give reliable live data or advice, and no tool can guarantee returns. The SEC bulletin on performance claims says it is virtually impossible to guarantee returns on investments with market risk. Verify numbers in filings and consider a licensed adviser.
Where do I verify what an AI says about a company?
Use the company filings on SEC EDGAR, a free public database. The annual report on Form 10-K covers the business, risk factors, management discussion and financial statements. Search by company name or ticker, check the filing date, and compare the model figures line by line.
