Prompts for coding tasks#

Five starting points#

5 prompts
Full briefPrincipal software architect
Act as a principal software architect. Review [PASTE YOUR CODEBASE MODULE] for architectural bottlenecks, memory leaks, and concurrency issues, and provide an optimized, refactored implementation in TypeScript.
AdvancedSenior DevOps engineer
Act as a senior DevOps engineer. Write a robust, production-ready Dockerfile and multi-stage build script for a Next.js Node.js application deployed on Google Cloud Run with automated health checks.
AdvancedExpert algorithm designer
Act as an expert algorithm designer. Implement a high-performance caching layer in Python using Redis, featuring asynchronous connection pooling, TTL strategies, and fallback error handling.
SpecializedPrincipal security engineer
Act as a principal security engineer. Perform a comprehensive threat modeling and vulnerability audit on [DESCRIBE YOUR AUTHENTICATION WORKFLOW], identifying injection vectors and providing secure code patches.
SpecializedLead backend engineer
Act as a lead backend engineer. Write an efficient, scalable RESTful API endpoint in Node.js/Express with strict input validation using Zod, comprehensive error handling middleware, and structured JSON logging.

What to add to any coding prompt#

  • The language, framework and version, and the files or error output the model needs.
  • The constraints, such as no new dependencies or a required style.
  • A request for tests that fail without the change.
  • An instruction to say what it is unsure about instead of guessing. Anthropic's guide includes a sample instruction not to speculate about code the model has not opened.

Key context and caveats#

Both Anthropic and OpenAI publish coding-specific advice, and it points the same way. OpenAI's guide says coding prompts work best when you define the agent's role, enforce structured tool use with examples, require thorough testing and set output standards, and it advises telling the model to test changes with unit tests. Anthropic's guide includes sample instructions such as avoiding over-engineering and not hard-coding values or building solutions that only work for specific test inputs.

That guidance is about how to ask. It does not say a prompt makes code correct. Our analysis: treat model output as an unreviewed contribution. The evidence summarised in our guide to AI-generated code quality shows why review and tests matter.

At a Glance#

Step What to do Why
Ask Role, task, constraints, tests Providers recommend explicit instructions
Run Execute tests and the code Output is not guaranteed correct
Review Read changed logic and dependencies Fabricated packages and insecure code appear in studies

Direct answer

What are the best AI prompts for coding?

No single prompt is best for coding. Give a clear role, task, language and constraints, and ask the model to test its changes, as Anthropic and OpenAI advise. Then run the code yourself, because generated code can be wrong or import packages that do not exist.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best AI prompts for coding?

No single prompt is best for coding. Give a clear role, task, language and constraints, and ask the model to test its changes, as Anthropic and OpenAI advise. Then run the code yourself, because generated code can be wrong or import packages that do not exist.

How should I structure an AI prompt for coding?

State the role, the exact task, the language and framework, constraints and the output format, then ask for tests. Anthropic recommends being explicit and sets a role in the system prompt, while OpenAI recommends requiring thorough testing. Give the model the relevant files instead of describing them.

Can I trust code that an AI writes?

Not without checking. Veracode reported 45% of code samples from more than 100 models failed its security tests, and a USENIX Security 2025 study found models recommend packages that do not exist. Run the tests, read changed logic and verify every dependency before merging.
