Prompts for testing code#

Five starting points#

5 prompts
Full briefPrincipal QA automation engineer
Act as a principal QA automation engineer. Write a complete suite of unit and integration tests using Jest and Supertest for a high-concurrency Node.js REST API endpoint, covering edge cases and race conditions.
AdvancedExpert security penetration tester
Act as an expert security penetration tester. Construct a comprehensive fuzzing and security test script in Python to evaluate a web application's resilience against injection attacks and rate-limiting bypasses.
AdvancedSenior frontend test architect
Act as a senior frontend test architect. Write robust end-to-end Cypress test specifications for a complex interactive multi-step web application form with real-time validation states.
SpecializedPerformance testing specialist
Act as a performance testing specialist. Write a k6 load testing script designed to simulate 10,000 concurrent virtual users hitting an edge-first AI inference server endpoint under stress.
SpecializedMeticulous code auditor
Act as a meticulous code auditor. Review [PASTE YOUR PYTHON TEST HARNESS], identify gaps in test coverage, and write rigorous property-based testing routines using Hypothesis.

Give the model what it needs#

  • The code under test and its dependencies, and the test framework and version.
  • The behaviour you expect, including edge cases, error conditions and inputs that should be rejected.
  • An instruction to name any assumption it makes instead of guessing.

For prompts that generate the code itself, see our coding prompts guide. The full prompt library is on our prompt library page.

Key context and caveats#

The framework documentation shows how small a test is: pytest says to create a file such as test_sample.py with a function containing an assert and run pytest, and it runs files named test_*.py or *_test.py. Python's unittest builds tests by subclassing TestCase with methods whose names start with test, and unittest.mock lets you replace parts of the system under test with mock objects. Jest's guide uses expect and toBe in a sum.test.js file, and Vitest runs files with .test. or .spec. in their names.

What these pages do not say is that a generated test is trustworthy. Our analysis: the risk is a test that passes whether or not the code is right. Anthropic's prompting guide includes a sample instruction not to hard-code values or create solutions that only work for specific test inputs, and states that tests are there to verify correctness, not to define the solution. Our guide to AI-generated code quality covers why verification matters.

Direct answer

What are the best AI prompts for testing your code?

AI can draft unit and integration tests quickly, but a passing test proves little unless it fails without the change it covers. Give the model the code and framework, then run the tests, break the code on purpose and confirm they catch it.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best AI prompts for testing your code?

AI can draft unit and integration tests quickly, but a passing test proves little unless it fails without the change it covers. Give the model the code and framework, then run the tests, break the code on purpose and confirm they catch it.

Can AI write unit tests for my code?

Yes, as a first draft. Give it the function, the framework and the behaviour you expect, including edge cases. Then run the tests, remove or break the code under test to confirm they fail, and read each assertion, because a generated test can pass without checking anything useful.

How do I check that an AI-written test is good?

Confirm it fails when the code is wrong, that it asserts specific outcomes instead of just running the code, and that it covers edge cases and errors. Anthropic advises against solutions that only work for specific test inputs, and that tests are there to verify correctness, not define the solution.
